Van Gaal’s funny press conference moments
Louis van Gaal says his treatment for prostate cancer has been successful. He revealed his illness earlier this month, while on his third term with the Netherlands team, which will lead the team at the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
Van Gaal recently told Dutch news agency ANP: ” I got through everything. I had to have radiation therapy 25 times. Then I had to wait 5 or 6 months to see if everything was okay. And it was. was fine.”
He previously explained that he had kept the illness a secret from his players for a long time. Going into more detail about his health problems, Van Gaal revealed that he has a rather severe form of cancer, but he is still actively undergoing treatment.
He said: “You don’t die of prostate cancer, at least not in 90% of cases. Usually other underlying diseases kill you. I was given preferential treatment in the hospital. I was given preferential treatment in hospital. I was allowed in through the door after arriving for treatment. I was treated wonderfully.”
Despite having to battle cancer at the time, Van Gaal still led the Netherlands to win tickets to the World Cup in Qatar later this year. They will face hosts Qatar, Senegal and Ecuador in the group stage, which kicks off in November.
The Netherlands have confirmed that Ronald Koeman will take over as head coach of their national team following Van Gaal’s resignation following the 2022 World Cup.
