On July 1, the World Football Association (FIFA) announced the integration of semi-automatic offside detection technology into the 2022 World Cup official ball “Al Rihla”, which is equipped with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor inside. The device sends data to the VAR room 500 times per second, helping to determine exactly when a player is passing or shooting.
In addition, the semi-automatic offside detection technology uses 12 dedicated cameras mounted under the stadium roof, which display 29 data points of movement of the ball and each player. The data will be analyzed 50 times per second to give the exact position of the player on the field, including body parts.

Thanks to the above-mentioned advanced technology integration, very similar to the goal line, the referee can check for offside and consult the referee in just a few seconds.
After the test is complete, data is built into a 3D image detailing the location of the body part that caused the player to be offside. This 3D image is displayed in real time on stadiums and TVs.
“In the 2018 World Cup, FIFA bravely applied video assistant referee technology with undeniable success. The semi-automatic offside technology is a new step after 3 years of research and testing.” I hope fans around the world You can see the benefits of it and FIFA is committed to applying technology to improve the game at all levels,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
